Alexander To Visit St. Louis

Rookie free agent wide receiver Danario Alexander, who had a breakout season as a senior at the University of Missouri a year ago, is expected to visit St. Louis on Monday.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Alexander had surgery to repair damaged cartilage in his knee in February and was not drafted. After months of rehab and training, he held a pro-day style workout on Wednesday in Houston and by all accounts in went well.

Adam Caplan of reported that Alexander ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds, recorded an outstanding time of 4.12 seconds in the in the short shuttle and posted a vertical jump of 41 ½ inches.

The next step for the former Tigers standout is to visit NFL teams so they can get a look at his surgically-repaired knee — he had three previous knee surgeries — and judge for themselves if Alexander is worth signing as a rookie free agent.

Alexander is expected to visit the St. Louis Rams for a physical on Monday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and a source close to the wide receiver said that the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans are also interested in him.

The Marlin, Texas, native, who will turn 22 next month, had a breakout senior season for the Missouri Tigers last fall when he recorded 113 receptions for 1,781 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The St. Louis Rams may be a good fit for Alexander considering their roster is filled with young and unproven wide receivers, including 2010 fourth-round pick Mardy Gilyard from the University of Cincinnati.

Donnie Avery was the team's most productive wideout in 2009 when he caught 47 passes for 589 yards and five touchdowns. The Rams have several other receivers who have shown flashes of potential — guys like Danny Amendola, who was signed off the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, and Brandon Gibson, who was acquired in a trade with the Eagles last year, and Laurent Robinson, who suffered a season-ending injury early in the year — but have yet to establish themselves as consistent playmakers.
