Rams claim QB Keenum off waivers

Case Keenum (USA TODAY Sports)

ST. LOUIS — The Rams have a new quarterback after claiming Case Keenum off waivers from the Houston Texans on Monday.

Keenum, who joins the mix with starter Shaun Hill and backup Austin Davis in St. Louis, was released by the Texans after they traded for Ryan Mallett from the New England Patriots.

Keenum, 26, started eight games for the Texans in 2013, where he completed 54.2 percent of his passes for 1,760 yards, with nine touchdowns and six interceptions, and a QB rating of 78.2.

He was competing with rookie Tom Savage for the backup job in Houston behind Ryan Fitzpatrick when the Texans acquired Mallett. Keenum appeared in four preseason games with the Texans and struggled, completing 53.8 percent of his passes for 254 yards, with zero touchdowns and two interceptions, for a QB rating of 51.3.

Keenum doesn’t appear to be the quarterback of the future in St. Louis, but he does have the experience in NFL regular season games that Davis does not.

Davis won the backup job with the Rams after outplaying rookie sixth-rounder Garrett Gilbert this preseason, but even though he spent parts of the past two seasons with the Rams — including as the backup to Kellen Clemens after Sam Bradford got hurt last season — he has yet to make his official NFL debut.

The Rams put tight end Justice Cunningham on the injured reserve list to open up a spot for Keenum on the 53-man roster. Cunningham, who was one of five tight ends on the roster, suffered an ankle injury in the fourth preseason game in Miami.
