Biography:

Jamel White continues to impress the Browns coaching staff with his spirited play, impressive talent, and outstanding dedication. An undrafted free agent out of the University of South Dakota (of all places), White was first signed by the Indianapolis Colts in 2000. When the Colts tried to shift White to the practice squad that fall, an alert Browns front office quickly snapped up the fleet-footed runner.

The Browns have groomed White as a third-down back, arguing that his soft hands, quick feet, and slight build make him a prototypical "change of pace" threat. But when White showed up to 2002 camp with a good 10 pounds of added muscle on his upper body, it became clear the young back would challenge those expectations. Since then, White has done nothing but out-perform all competition at the running back position.

At 5' 9", White is a shifty runner with a low center of gravity and quick feet. He is able to make lightning cuts and explode upfield. White showed a national TV audience what he could do by lighting up the Green Bay Packers in a snowy 2002 contest. But with first round draft pick William Green in the fold, White will need to be truly special to hold onto a starting spot. White is also active in the community, and runs a Summer football camp in addition to other activies.
