| Born John Russell Niklos in Worthington, Oh…nickname is J.R…attended Thomas-Worthington High (Worthington, Oh.)…lettered three times each in football and track…was named all-region and all-district in football, and all-state and all-America in track…two-time scholar athlete.
Signed by Rams 9/12/02 from Seattle Seahawks practice squad…spent one week on Seahawks practice squad after spending the 2002 preseason with Seattle…originally signed as rookie free agent by Seattle 4/29/02…finished his collegiate career at Western Illinois with 80 receptions for 1,235 yards and eight touchdowns.
Senior: Named to all-Gateway Conference first team as senior…played in 10 games at tight end and collected career-highs in receptions (44) and yards (589) with one touchdown. Junior: Selected to all-Gateway first team…finished third on the team with 15 receptions, fifth on the team with 173 receiving yards, and second in touchdown receptions with three. Sophomore: Led team with a 22.5-yard average per catch, among best for tight ends in the nation, best average among all Gateway starters…finished third on the team with 21 receptions and second on team with 473 receiving yards…also scored four touchdowns.
