Continued success in sophomore season in which he earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl honor by leading the team with 148 tackles was second in interceptions with 3 and third in sacks with six. NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl selection in 2000. Voted by teammates as the 2000 rookie recipient of Brian Piccolo Award. One of two defensive rookies for Chicago in 2000 to play all 16 games, starting at middle linebacker for final 14 to establish a team record for starts at the position. Shattered Bears rookie records with 165 total tackles and eight sacks. Became second Bears rookie ever to lead team in tackles (Doug Plank, 1975).
College
Became New Mexico’s first first-round pick since Robin Cole was drafted by Pittsburgh in 1977. Only second defensive player in past seven drafts chosen in first round by Bears (Walt Harris in 1996). Versatile player who played outside linebacker and safety on defense, receiver on offense and return specialist. Two-year starter for Lobos who finished career third on school’s all-time tackling charts with 442 stops. Also had three interceptions, 11 sacks and caused 11 fumbles. Averaged 18.8 yards on five kickoff returns, 15.1 yards on 13 punt returns. Six of of seven catches resulted in touchdowns. As a senior, earned First-team all-America selection by Walter Camp, Football Writers Association of America and Associated Press; second-team choice by Sporting News and Football News. All-Mountain Conference first-team and Player of Year choice. One of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the top defensive back in college football. |
