As long as a settlement is reached within five days of being placed on injured reserve, the player is eligible to be re-signed six weeks after the length of the settlement. As an example, if a settlement is for four weeks, the player can return after Week 10. In the interim, he can sign at any time with any other team in the league.
The Rams are deciding whether to try to reach an injury settlement with safety Kevin Payne, who went on injured reserve Saturday with a knee injury. If there is no settlement, the Rams will keep the conditional seventh-round pick involved in the trade that brought Payne here from the Bears in late April. If there is a settlement, and the Rams sign him later in the season and put him on the active roster, they would then owe Chicago the seventh-round pick.
Also on Sunday, the Rams tried out rookie center David Moosman. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by Arizona after the draft, and was waived by the Cardinals on Aug. 30 in the cutdown to 75 players.

The Rams made it possible to potentially get tackle Phil Trautwein back later in the season when they reached an injury settlement with him Sunday and waived him from the injured reserve list. Trautwein was placed on injured Tuesday because of a knee injury.
