The fractured fibula that landed left guard Tom Nutten on injured reserve
Tuesday has had a domino effect on the Rams' roster.
In addition to being a starting guard, Nutten was also the No. 1 backup at tackle. He played right tackle on occasion this season when left tackles Orlando Pace and Grant Williams were both injured. On those occasions, right tackle John St. Clair moved to the left side and Nutten took St. Clair's spot.
With Nutten out for the season, Frank Garcia was the only backup guard with Heath Irwin replacing Nutten as the starter, and there were no backup tackles.
That resulted in the Rams reaching agreement with tackle/guard Jerry Wisne and moving tackle Andy King to the active roster from the practice squad. The Rams also released wide receiver Yo Murphy and fourth quarterback Scott Covington.
With running back Marshall Faulk still an uncertain participant because of a high ankle sprain, along with the concussion suffered by running back Lamar Gordon Sunday, the Rams added insurance at the position with the re-signing of Justin Watson.
Watson was with the Rams from 1999-2001, but wasn't tendered as a restricted free agent last March. He has been with no other teams since then. Depending on his conditioning, Watson could possibly contribute on special teams.
