RAMS SIGN STEVEN JACKSON
TO SIX-YEAR CONTRACT
The St. Louis Rams announced today that running back Steven Jackson has signed a six-year contract. Terms were not revealed.
“Steven is one of the premier NFL players and eventually could be considered one of the best to ever play the running back position,” said Rams coach Scott Linehan.
“Steven is young (just turned 25 in July) and coming into his prime,” said Linehan. “We look forward to his enjoying a long and productive career with the Rams.”
Jackson exploded onto the NFL scene with a breakout season in 2006, when the Rams’ offense was sixth overall in the NFL and Jackson and Marc Bulger helped make the Rams the fourth team in NFL history to finish the season with a 4,000-yard-plus passer and 1,500-yard-plus rusher.
Jackson is one of two players (LaDainian Tomlinson) to catch at least 90 passes and rush for at least 1,500 yards, having accomplished the feat in 2006.
Jackson led the NFL and ranks fifth in NFL history with 2,334 yards from scrimmage in 2006 and his 90 catches in 2006 represents the sixth highest total for a running back in NFL history. His 436 offensive touches in 2006 rank 11th all-time.
The 6 foot, 2-inch, 230-pound running back is in his fifth season and many of his achievements have come at an age younger than any other player.
Jackson’s 2006 rushing total has been surpassed only by Eric Dickerson in Rams history. Jackson is the only Rams players since 2005 to rush for a touchdown and is one of five NFL players to rush for at least 1,000 yards in each of the last three seasons.
Steven ranks fourth in the NFL with an average of 115.7 yards from scrimmage since 2005. Jackson is younger than any of the three ahead of him and is the only player since 2003 to score a touchdown from 50-plus yards in three consecutive games.
