Martz On The Mike - Sept. 16
RamsNation News Bulletin
"Chad Cota hurt his shoulder. It is just a bruise, but we were a little concerned that he may have fractured a rib. Other than that I think we came out of this thing physically in good shape, other than the normal bumps and bruises."
on rams offense:
"I thought the offensive line played very well. I thought they protected Kurt very well. I thought we did well in the running game. We had a couple of false starts that hurt us, obviously. We need to eliminate those types of errors. I thought Isaac Bruce played as well as I have seen him play. I thought he was nothing short of outstanding in this game. The run after the catch, his routes, down field as a lead blocker, I thought he was outstanding in the game."
on rams defense:
"Defensively we had some pretty good performances. I thought Robert Thomas for a rookie, particularly his first start, was exceptional. He played 30 plays and had seven tackles and then Adam Archuleta showed up with 13 or 14 tackles."
on rams special teams:
"On special teams, for Mitch Berger, that was a Pro Bowl day. You talk about dropping the ball in there with the ability to down it and those types of things. Terrence Wilkins had an outstanding day as a kickoff returner and was just a frog whisker from breaking one of those and going the distance. By in large we made tremendous progress in our special teams. We are so much better in our special teams than any time since I have been the head coach. I was very excited and pleased about where we are right now in special teams. We’ve made some tremendous improvement there."
"As I look at the tape, it is a play or two away. When you lose two games and you are within a touchdown in both games, that is what it comes down to, the ability to make a couple of plays at the right time. It does in this league come down to a couple of plays as it always does when you play good teams. We have to make those plays and eliminate those mistakes. There are enough good things to build on and know that we are going to be a really good team and continue in that direction."
on rams pass rush:
"It is not what it needs to be. Certainly we can do a better job on rushing the passer than what we did. We shouldn’t have to rely on trying to bring blitzes and dogs all of the time. I know we will get better in that area."
on rams focus:
"I am not concerned about the teams focus. I am not concerned about that. We have got to eliminate those types of errors. Let me tell you this, over the past few years, we have made those types of errors and overcome it and won anyway. If you are not careful, you can end up beating yourself up over those things and really get yourself in a hole emotionally that you can’t climb out of if you are not careful."
do you feel like the defense is swarming to the football?:
"I think for the most part, not at as entire unit. For the most part we are, but there are still a few that just aren’t where we need to be."
on being down early in the game:
"We just have not come out as well as I would expect. That is something we will work on."
on not playing starters more in preseason:
"I think our injury situation had a lot more to do with that than anything else. I was so concerned that four of our seven defensive linemen were out. Our wide receivers, we had our two starters, and the two backups were out. So, now if you expose your two starters in the preseason and you lose them, then you are playing with five, six, seven, and eight. Those are a lot of the issues that were going through my mind. I just wouldn’t do that with Marshall. Marshall played super, he always does. He was outstanding in this game. That didn’t hurt his performance."
on tampa bay defense:
"Obviously, I like what they do on defense, I hired Lovie (Smith). We have been through this for the past two years, talking about that. I like what they do, and they are very well schooled at what they do. I think they have great personnel."
on WR terrence wilkins:
"At this point, I think he is ready to contribute. I think at this point last week he was close, but in a game like this I just wasn’t ready to risk that."
have you thrown the ball down field as much?:
"Have we called those plays, yes. Have we thrown it down the field, we would have to chart that. Sometimes those things get checked down quite a bit. I know that in the Denver game we ended up throwing a lot of check downs. There were a lot of issues where if we would have been able to hold up we would have been able to make some big throws downfield."
on WR troy edwards:
"He is very close, I think we can use him on offense this week. We will look at him in practice and see where he is."
on message to team in meeting today:
"There are a lot of things I talked to the team about today. There are a lot of things we talked about. But, nothing I would tell the team I would ever discuss in the media. I think that is very private between the football team and myself, we have always considered that a family issue. In general terms I just felt like we are very close. We did an awful lot of good things in that game. We have to eliminate the mistakes and continue forward. In general, that is pretty much it."
on QB kurt warner:
"He was fine throwing the ball. He was fine."
is the thumb an issue:
"No, he made a mental mistake on the last throw of the game, he thought he (the receiver) was breaking in and he broke out, and he acknowledged that. I thought he threw some really good balls in that game."
on starting season 0-2:
"Last year at this time we could be sitting here at 0-2 very easily. Two years ago we won them in the final seconds, think about the Seattle and Denver games from two years ago. There a just a couple of plays here and there, it is not an attitude thing. I thought we played much harder and much better in this game in a lot of respects than we did the week before. You have to make plays when the opportunity is there.”
