Stopped in their efforts to acquire running back Michael Bennett from the Saints, the Rams reached agreement Wednesday with former
Vikings running back Moe Williams on a one-year contract. Williams was expected
to begin practicing with the Rams either Wednesday night or Thursday
afternoon. "He is familiar with the system and he's a veteran
that has played in a role as both a backup and No. 3 guy," Rams coach Scott
Linehan said of Williams, who was with the Vikings when Linehan was the
offensive coordinator there from 2002-2004. Williams underwent
microfracture surgery on his knee, but the Rams received a report that the
procedure worked, which isn't the case with all players. Linehan
said, "He feels he's in better shape than he was last year at this
time." The coach added that the team was "in the mix" for
Bennett, but that it just didn't work out. The Saints agreed Tuesday night to
deal Bennett to the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed pick in the 2007
draft. Some reports say the pick is in the fourth round.
