The Roving Ram - Rounds the Horn
Shawn Springs
Ram Nation's man around the NFL
Posted Sep 1, 2003

Welcome back, Rams and Ramlettes. As we celebrate Labor Day here in the good ol’ U.S. and I celebrate the first of what I hope are many NU wins, allow us to sit back for a moment and check out what’s going on around the NFL without any further adieu.

- Gang Activity Considered in Porter Shooting

As I’m sure you heard over the weekend, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter was shot along with six other people. Police believe the cause may have been gang activity. Porter is currently recovering in the hospital after being shot in the buttocks. The man who was killed in the shooting, Christopher Wilford, apparently had a history of gang activity along with several arrests. “Porter was in the wrong place at the wrong time," stated police spokesman Sonny Jackson. "We are looking at every possibility. It could have been gang activity," stated Jackson. "You have to ask whether it was random." Porter, a graduate of Colorado State University, was in town for the Colorado-Colorado State game played at Invesco Field.

- Shawn Springs to Miss Eight Weeks

Yet another key factor in a team’s plans has gone down for quite some time. Cornerback Shawn Springs of the Seattle Seahawks will be out for eight weeks with a broken bone in his shoulder. Springs was injured during the first quarter of the Seahawks-Broncos exhibition last Friday. With Springs on the sidelines, the ‘Hawks will be going with rookie Marcus Trufant out of Washington State and Ken Lucas as their starting cornerbacks. The Seahawks D was already suffering after Chad Eaton was placed on IR after undergoing surgery on his right knee.

- Peete Named Starter/Captain for Panthers

Carolina quarterback Rodney Peete has praise being heaped on him even after a so-so preseason. Peete has been named the starting quarterback for the Panthers along with a team captain. Muhsin Muhammad was also selected to represent the offense. "It's good to be named when it's voted on by your peers and teammates," Peete stated. "Along with that comes a lot of responsibility. I've felt like a leader on this team all along, and now it's been solidified and I feel good about it." Jake Delhomme and Chris Weinke both fought very diligently for the start which leaves some folks wondering if the Peete decision was indeed the right one. "We had a couple of young guys that played pretty well in the preseason and this is going to be the talk," Peete stated. "But for me I approached the whole offseason and training camp getting ready for Jacksonville. All the other stuff that was talked about I didn't allow it to affect me."

- Gary Finds New Home in Detroit

Olandis Gary was playing against his current team less than a week ago, now he is probably replacing James Stewart for the time being. “Everything has been going pretty fast in the last few days," Gary stated. "It never entered my mind on Thursday that I was going to be a Lion, but that's what the NFL is all about. You have to learn to adjust in a hurry or you will be out of the league." Lions president Matt Millen was on the phone with the brass over in Buffalo to acquire Gary minutes after Stewart was out and the decision on his future had been made. "We didn't want to end up short-handed like we did at that position last year," he stated.

- The Roving Roundup:

Dolphins Sign Five, Jets Sign Five As Well, Cowboys Waive Dantzler and Detroit Adds Three

- The Miami Dolphins have signed on five individuals including former Dallas quarterback Clint Stoerner. Four other players were signed to the practice squad.

- The New York Jets have signed on five new players as well. Linebacker Mark Brown, running backs Little John Flowers and Johnathan Reese, guard Brandon Moore and wide receiver Cecil Moore were all added to the practice squad.

- The Dallas Cowboys have waived do-it-all former QB Woody Dantzler so that the team could make room to add cornerback Jemeel Powell, a rookie out of California.

- The Detroit Lions have added on David Kircus, tackle Ben Johnson and tight end Matt Murphy to their practice squad.
