STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

BATTLE OF THE WEEK:

Arlen Harris, Leon Johnson and Joffrey Reynolds for the third running back job -- Harris has emerged as the possible favorite after an excellent performance in the preseason opener against Oakland. After that game, he was placed on the first unit of kick coverage teams, with Johnson taken off. Reynolds, who did not play against the Raiders, is also expected to see some playing time to judge what he can do in game situations.

OTHER BATTLEFRONTS:

Courtland Bullard, Bryce Fisher and Randy Garner for backup DE -- Bullard has switched from linebacker, and has impressed the coaches with his daily progress. Fisher and Garner have also showed excellent athleticism.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

MLB Robert Thomas -- Thomas has been all over the field in practice and games, now that he is playing the position he did in college at UCLA. His rookie season got off to a bad start because of nagging injuries, and the fact he was playing on the outside. Thomas got stronger during the offseason program and is justifying his selection with a first-round pick last year.
