Rams lose preseason finale in Miami

Rams coach Jeff Fisher wasn’t taking any chances in the final preseason game on Thursday night in Miami. Not after what happened in Cleveland.

So Fisher went with his backups against the Dolphins’ backups and the difference was two fourth-quarter touchdowns by Miami that turned the contest into a 14-13 loss for the Rams.

St. Louis concluded its preseason schedule with a 1-3 record, though the biggest loss was losing Sam Bradford to a season-ending knee injury in that lone win over Cleveland last Saturday.

But Fisher’s plan for Thursday was to try to avoid further damage to the roster and it appears that the Rams emerged from Miami as healthy as they could have. Next up is trimming 22 more players from the preseason to get down to the required 53-man limit by 3 p.m. CT on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS

Greg Zuerlein kicked a 49-yard field goal in the second quarter and a 53-yarder in the third quarter. He attempted a 63-yard field goal just before halftime but missed it just wide left.

E.J. Gaines intercepted a tipped pass in the second quarter that led to an Austin Davis touchdown pass to Austin Pettis to make it 10-0.

Undrafted rookie defensive lineman Ethan Westbrooks had a sack late in the second quarter, his second of the preseason. Westbrooks was credited with four tackles.

Michael Sam, the seventh-round defensive end, was credited with six tackles.

STATS

Quarterback Austin Davis played the entire first half and completed 12 of 19 passes for 162 yards, one touchdown and a QB rating of 107.8.

Rookie sixth-rounder Garrett Gilbert, who played the entire second half, completed just six of 14 passes for 50 yards and a QB rating of 52.7.

Undrafted rookie running back Trey Watts carried 13 times for 51 yards, an average of 3.9 yards per carry. Third-rounder Tre Mason gained 14 yards on six carries, an average of 2.3 yards per.

Tight end Brad Smelley was the Rams’ leading receiver with four catches for 46 yards.
