Rams waive/injured running back Pead

ST. LOUIS — The Rams on Wednesday waived/injured running back Isaiah Pead, just a few days after he tore his ACL in the loss to the Green Bay Packers. Though it’s very possible Pead will clear waivers and be placed on injured reserve.

Wednesday’s move, which was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner and Tom Pelissero of USA TODAY Sports, doesn’t come as a huge surprise out of Rams Park.

Though the third-year running back, who was a second-round pick by the Rams in 2012, drew some praise from coach Jeff Fisher on Sunday when the coach confirmed that he was lost for the entire season.

“He worked very, very hard to get in the position to where he was a very productive special teamer for us and we had high hopes for him doing some things out of the backfield for us as well,” Fisher said.

“So he’ll be undergoing surgery in the next 10 days to two weeks, which is typical with these injuries,” the coach added. “So he’s got a long road ahead of him but I’m confident that as he’s matured over the last couple years that he’ll get back in good shape next year. Anyway, we’ll wish him the best though his rehab.”

The 24-year-old running back has struggled to make an impact so far in St. Louis. He had a grand total of 75 yards rushing and 94 yards receiving in his first two seasons and had just 17 carries in 25 career games.

But he remained hopeful that the 2014 season would be his chance to become a bigger contributor in the backfield.

“Last year was last year and this is a new year,” Pead said during OTAs. “I'm focusing on playing running back. Helping on special teams also but my main focus is getting back there in the backfield.”

It’s possible that Pead will get claimed and get a fresh start elsewhere, but it’s probably unlikely since his contract pays him $757,100 this season and $940,650 in 2015 before he becomes a free agent.
