ST. LOUIS — Rams defensive end Chris Long was selected as the NFC defensive player of the week after his performance in the team’s 20-17 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

“I think of it as kind of a group award,” Long said following Wednesday’s practice. “They’ve been giving me hell about that. We all played a good game up front and we all deserve a lot of credit for the pressure we were able to generate. I think guys like Fred Robbins and James Hall, I’ve benefited from playing alongside them, and that’s the way it goes. When one of us eats, we all eat.”

The third-year defensive end, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 draft, had two of the Rams’ seven sacks on Sunday and has 2.5 sacks on the season.

“A lot of weeks of football get played in a year, though,” he said. “It’s really nice, but I’m not going to hang my hat on this one. It’s the team awards and honors that I think we’re all striving to achieve here and that’s winning the division. If we’re playing good ball, I don’t care if we get awards or not, but it is an honor.”

Long had four sacks in his rookie season and five last season.
